Thar coal project: Recommends provision of assistance to Dr Samar




ISLAMABAD: National Assembly (NA) standing committee on petroleum and natural resources has assured Dr Samar Mubarakmand of every possible cooperation in connection with Thar Coal Project and recommended government to provide financial assistance to him in making project success.
Committee met here Tuesday under its chairman Sardar Talib Nakai in parliament house. Besides Dr Samar Mubarakmand, members of Thar Coal committee and other senior officials attended the meeting.
Dr Samar told the committee coal deposits over 175 billion tons was available in Thar. Initially, project for generation of 100 megawatt electricity out of Thar coal has been initiated, he pointed out. It will cost 115 million dollars but only 9 million dollars have been provided by the government so far. Electricity to be generated from Thar Coal will cost us Rs 4 per unit, he told.
He informed the committee that India was producing 64.6 percent electricity from coal while Pakistan was producing only 2.2 percent electricity. Pakistan was suffering loss to the tune of Rs230 billion this way, he added.
